is there a light at the end of the tunnel? or does the tunnel even have an end. my wife, who grew up in Portland, keeps hoping. everything I hear tells me that it is going to get worse, much worse, until a Giuliani is recognized and allowed to lead. unfortunately Giulianis have a very short half-life and don't age well. after two years of covid, my grandson is again out of school. it's not like there isn't a huge amount of money out there that could fix that, but the bureaucracy is moribund, incapable of doing anything positive. our Augean stables need a new Hercules.

The reason for hope is that voters in Portland, according to polls, largely agree on what must be done: recriminalize hard drugs and beef up law enforcement response and stop public camping of homeless. The voters know what's messing their city up, and have the right instincts about fixing it. But there's a very loud, funded and influential group of bitter-enders dedicated to leniency on all fronts. That way lies continued decay.

Very Interesting. I would subscribe to his substack except I don't need to add Portland to the stuff that irritates me. Bend and the Bulletin provides more than enough.

One of the greatest failures of Portland journalism has been the absence of any investigative reporting on the people behind the anarchist war on property of 2020-2021. The hundreds of plate glass windows didn't break themselves. For many months creeps dressed head-to-toe in black regularly assembled at the announced time and place for the purpose of rampaging yet again through Downtown and nearby business districts. Their direct actions caused millions of dollars in damage and caused untold heartache among Portlanders over the breakdown of law and order.

The Oregonian will devote unlimited column inches to telling its readers how racist the Rose City is, but it can't muster the will to tell the who, what, when, where, why and how of the black-bloc rioters and their leadership.

Great interview, however impatient that I am, I nearly always speed up audio and video content. Not having that here, it would be nice to have a transcript of the conversation to peruse quickly. Aside from Substack and Xitter, the Reddit and Lemmy communities are also quite active. Reading some of the comments, I would like to call attention to the President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, who is running for re-election.

If he can turn things around in El Salvador, we can do so in Portland. I think he got in because the country is too small for its elections to be interfered with by outsiders. But perhaps this time, he won't be "allowed" to win.
