I don’t know Sophie Peel’s politics, but I hope she’s on it also. Thanks for this. Democrats don’t really care what the voters think. They know what’s best.

Sophie has been a bit more reasonable lately but she has a long history of police hate articles and an apologist approach to crime in Portland. Look at her stolen car saga.

and so it goes... - Kurt Vonnegut. just one question: how do they know (if, in fact, they do) that only 306 non-US citizens are registered to vote? data entry issue, indeed! "The City That Works" needs to stop!

My friend (RIP) always called it "The City of Jerks".

As they used to. say in another machine-dominated city: Vote early and often!" This is the standard underbelly of machine politics, as old as Tammany Hall and the "Shame of the Cities." Anyone familiar with retail politics knows about "street money." God only knows how many "bundled" mail-in ballots are coming from nursing homes, nonprofits, and other below-the-radar sources. I suspect that a good chunk of that last-minute $500K to bail out Tina (that Jeff has written so much about) was creamed off in "get out the vote" shenanigans.

Late 19th century progressives thought that primary elections would help to iron out the many corrupt election issues--weirdly, today's progs want to do away entirely with primaries and dump everything into one big ranked-choice poll. The pros are always ahead of the mouth-breathing voters, especially in Oregon.

It's near impossible to verify and clean the voter rolls. Clackamas County election integrity volunteers are currently researching 3,850 people that have submitted a change of address and registered in another state, but are still on Oregons' voter rolls. Motor voter is a bad idea, possibly criminal. No, voting in Oregon doesn't feel good, unless you are high on marijuana. Time for a change at the SoS office, I'm voting (if it counts) for Dennis Linthicum.

306 x 1000 is probably a more accurate number.

So much for "the will of the people" voting against licenses for illegals. Where are you now leftists?

Unlikely that this was a "data entry mistake". Why did they pass all of the modifications to registration and voter eligibility if this was not intended along the way. Not buying it.

It wasn't a "data entry issue."

At the immediate level it was likely a failure of IT management, one of many that have plagued agencies of the state of Oregon in recent years. This is speculation, but I would attribute it to below-market compensation for IT professionals, understaffing in key competencies and the hiring and retention of incompetent line staff and managers. The bureaucratic culture may be dysfunctional in that workers don't feel empowered to report problems or suggest improvements for various reasons.

At the legislative level, the left hand did not know or care what the right hand was doing. The oversight that led to the registration of non-citizens is reminiscent of the implementation failures that occur when voters approve half-baked initiative measures. A small, closed group of people slap together a text without having it reviewed independently for coherence and feasibility. A vivid example is the measure that was intended to curb legislative walkouts but ended up with the Oregon Supreme Court publishing a primer on statutory construction.

I want to think that this is not a case of someone knowingly registering non-citizens as voters for partisan purposes or to advance some other political agenda.

What's even more disconcerting to me and my family is that I can go to any city in Oregon, big or small, and see groups of 3-5 Hispanic men 20-35 y/o, well-groomed and nice clothes, walking the streets. This is on any weekday. I can't believe all these guys are working agriculture. Maybe they work at one of the numerous Amazon data centers, I don't know. My Spidey sense is they are getting money from someplace (I see them at Walmart and other stores) and have some sort of mission to fulfill. I'm afraid the way our Government at all levels has been acting out over the last few years has made me more cynical. Any thoughts or insights?

I have to apologize for my too-easy comment. we live in what used to be a strictly agricultural county (fruit and forest) and consequently have a large hispanic population. more than a few of these families have been here for a lot longer than a lot of the caucasian residents. as such, they have become an integral part of our society making major economic contributions to our area, both in business and society.

Any thoughts or insights?

Yes. Trafficking in racist conspiracies (which is what this is) doesn't solve problems; it creates them.

Likely just the tip of the iceberg in terms of alien voters. On another point, note that DMV calls it a “driver license,” not a “driver’s license.” Important distinction. It’s not your license. You don’t possess or control the license, the state does. They can do what they please with it, including registering an alien to vote.
