So much effort is put forth trying to legislate help for the criminal, for the mentally ill and the substance abuser. What I see happen all to often are nonprofit groups formed that spend huge amounts of the designated $$$ and leave the people they are supposed to help worse off through politics, greed and incompetence. More oversight on “results” is needed for all these nonprofits whenever money disbursal depends on the current regime.
Great interview of what really happens behind closed doors. This should be on every news station in Oregon. I couldn’t agree more with Rep. Diehl. As I’ve said before on this site 4002 will do very little to solve the 110 mess. Rep. Diehl reinforced that thought, nothing but a money grab with all the “grabbers” in charge. Do a little homework before the elections, voter education is essential! We can turn this around.
Well, then, it's disappointing to hear someone as credible as Representative Diehl debase himself by parroting the worst members of his party who think it's clever and naughty to always refer to the opposition as the "Democrat Party" and to individual members as "Democrat politicians."
Oh, sure, Republicans can probably cite scores of reasons why Democrats merit the insult. It's just a guess, but they'd probably start by listing why "Democrat" office holders aren't really democratic at all.
Then Democrats would fire right back with a bill of indictment against Republicans for their past abuses.
Pretty soon we'd be relitigating Cain v Abel, and what will have been accomplished?
Yes, 40 years of DEMOCRATIC PARTY control has not been good for Oregon. Representative Diehl's description of the pro-drug progressive cabal who control the funds that are so desperately needed to dig the state out of the addiction crisis barely scratched the surface. Most of Portland's progressive Dems including my spineless and woke representatives in Salem need to be fired and replaced by moderates. And I'm a Democrat.
However, unless Representative Diehl is planning on packing the city with Republicans on election day the way Rajneesh did with homeless people in his day, it's going to be a majority of Democratic voters who clean house in Portland.
Maybe poking them in the eye with a stick every time the name of their party comes up isn't such a smart strategy.
should be... "For of all sad words of tongue or pen, The saddest are these: 'It might have been!'" - Maud Miller, a poem by John Greenleaf Whittier. Hopefully, your statement about Mr. Diehl will buck that trend.
I had to retire my civil engineer's license in Oregon because it wasn't worth the expense of all the continuing education requirements, none of which would have improved my expertise in my chosen specialty, that Oregon mandates. They cost big bucks and most have little to do with improving the competence required in a given field. Oddly enough, I am still qualified to practice in California. The licensing agencies in Oregon have only two priorities, reducing the competition and funding the bureaucracy.
As a retired lawyer, I'd like to add that as a licensing agency the Oregon State Bar has a third priority, and that's advancing the cause of diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism.
Starting this year, the graduates of ABA-accredited law schools wishing to be admitted to practice in Oregon can pursue a cockamamie and subpar alternative to the bar exam.
Here's the rationale as reported in the Washington Post:
"Students of color probably will also benefit . . . The bar exam has 'at least contributed' to a bottleneck in inclusion and equity in the legal profession . . . which means alternatives may increase diversity in the field."
Equity means constantly lowering the standards in the impossible quest to achieve equality of outcome. In this case, it's the public who stand to lose when they entrust their affairs to underqualified lawyers. Who will minority lawyers who owe their admission to dumbed-down standards blame when they fail to thrive?
You and your guest are very informative. Thank you for the effort. Only with people like Mr. Diehl will the State climb out of the dumpster.

A lot of that spending actually makes things a lot worse.

Language matters, right?

And:
"Like many standardized tests, the exam has produced scores with racial disparities for decades, The Washington Post reported, sharpening concerns regarding a lack of diversity in the legal field." https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/11/16/oregon-bar-exam-alternative-apprenticeship/
Correlation does not prove causation, but it's not nice to point that out I guess. At least the folks at the Oregon State Bar are too sophisticated to try to claim, as did the Oregon State Board of Education, that such exams present a "harmful hurdle for historically marginalized students." https://www.oregonlive.com/education/2023/10/oregon-again-says-students-dont-need-to-prove-mastery-of-reading-writing-or-math-to-graduate-citing-harm-to-students-of-color.html

odd, mr. Soros doesn't seem to have any trouble finding incompetents to run for district attorney.
The profession of full of entitled white daddy's boys.
