Isn't it beyond odd that The Oregonian had a terrific story...and has dropped the ball. And is it sheer coincidence that the current AG declined to cash in for yet another term running 10-thousand foot protection for the machine? As they say: follow the money.

Jeff--great reporting. I'd like to cross-post this latest in PortlandDissent.

Thanks, Richard. Go for it!

THE OREGONIAN SHOULD BE PROSECUTED . . .

Excellent report, I need to re-read when I can better concentrate on the particulars. Could you expound a bit on Ryan Salame and his connection as a Republican donor? I'll try digging into him when I can find time.

Thank you and keep your shovel sharp!

Expand full comment

Basically, Salame was on the Republican side what Singh was for the Democrat side: a straw man who made donations in his name with funds that came, ultimately, from FTX, a related entity or a related individual.

"Billionaire Sam Bankman-Fried has spent millions backing political newcomer Carrick Flynn. A look at both men's backgrounds shows they have traveled in similar orbits for years. Carrick Flynn, it seems, has everybody flummoxed."

From "What does a crypto tycoon want with Oregon’s new congressional district?" https://www.opb.org/article/2022/04/25/what-does-a-crypto-tycoon-want-with-oregons-new-congressional-district/

As long as we're trying to settle scores with the loathsome boy-man Sam Bankman-Fried and his sleazy operatives such as Nishad Singh,, let's not neglect to kick SBF's fauxregonian congressional candidate Carrick Flynn around the room a bit - figuratively speaking - for good measure.

The good news is that voters in Oregon's 6th congressional district were too astute to fall for Flynn's phony farmer getup and his "effective altruism" nonsense. Ordinarily, a carpetbagger's defeat at the polls would be an occasion to celebrate the squandering of his donors' dollars, only in this case SBF was very likely gambling with money stolen from investors. Let's hope Flynn's ridiculous parachute candidacy will prove to be his last appearance in Oregon politics as well as his first.

The first time I heard about SBF was in the context of the Flynn race. It didn't even register to me who he was at the time - just some rich tech dude who was pumping a bunch of money into this random guy's campaign. But then when the DPO donation story broke I circled back to the Flynn stuff and SBF popping twice in Oregon elections is what got me going on all this.

Corruption. It makes me feel like moderate Republican candidates in Oregon simply don't stand a chance against the Democrat machine, which will stop at nothing to maintain power. I will continue to vote, but between this type of story and my "leaky" mail in vote (I could have got away with casting a ballot for no less than three out of state family members this past election) I don't have a lot of hope. But Richard, the initiative you and others are taking to inform fellow Oregonians of the corruption is admirable and necessary. Thank you.

when is the "big one" coming and will it dump all those idiots west of the cascades into the ocean? just kidding, BUT...

The comradeship’s commitment to truth and transparency runs deep and the inadvertent campaign fraudulence is sure to be quickly disclosed by all Oregon parties, er, ahem, at least the one party. …Which explains the Oregonians’s loss of interest in the story, especially the part about New Yorker Ron Wyden’s non-geographic involvement.

This doesn't surprise me. They're all Grifters with their hand in the bag, stealing what they can. Disgusting.

No papers in Eastern Oregon have covered this story either. It's like the termites in Salem, Portland and their willing stooges in the press have managed, once again, to stifle their corruption. Meanwhile, ODOT is cutting services across the state as winter approaches. Makes a guy want to go postal!

Don't do that! I wonder if the term "going postal" even means anything to people, say, 30 years old and younger?

Rep Chavez DeRemer also appears to have taken FTX money from Ryan Salame, and should return it, too.

From https://joehoft.com/breaking-exclusive-steve-scalise-and-13-rino-holdouts-derailing-jim-jordan-are-connected-to-ftx-and-voter-mule-donations/

The Former co-CEO of FTX, Ryan Salame, pled guilty early last month to “Conspiracy to Make Unlawful Political Contributions and Defraud the Federal Election Commission and Conspiracy to Operate an Unlicensed Money Transmitting Business.” Salame admitted that his job at FTX was to illegally funnel money to Republican politicians and political causes, while his co-conspirator, Sam Bankman-Fried, funneled money to Democrats.

You're right, FEC records show Salame contributed $1,000 to Lori Chavez-DeRemer on September 28, 2022.

Given that Republicans were involved as well, we should perhaps ask some questions as to whether this scheme was also used to prop up Drazan herself, and the Oregon Republican Party's Drazan-totally-won-the-primary-and-can-totally-beat-Betsy tap dance routine.

Multiple Republican primary candidates had more personality and pulse than Drazan--and more ability to complete a sentence that wasn't already said by Betsy Johnson. And, of course, Betsy Johnson was a viable candidate with whom originated anything of substance that Drazan ever parroted. I attended several, substantial meet-the-candidate events during the primary, including both the official Republican candidates and Johnson, and Drazan wasn't at a single one. I've always had some doubts as to how she managed to win the primary. And those doubts weren't assuaged by the way ORP and Oregon press whitewashed her abject failure to perform in the debates. Someone should look more deeply into the Republicans who participated in Singh's little conspiracy, and ask what role they played in ensuring that losers like Drazan "won" primaries.
