Very strange, part of "keep Portland weird" crowd? Certainly doesn't help our image nationally, tough to think it could get much worse. Let's see if the left circles the wagons around this couple since they appear to support the globalist philosophy. On a side note regarding possessing burglary tools, fire engines could be considered a large B&E tool box, that's what they carry to access buildings on fire.

Yeah, and they haven't been charged with attempted burglary, etc. Could be it was entirely innocent, as Dustin's mom told me. Could be something else.

If you close-read the article, it says that Dustin had anti-Biden posts and wanted to "give the forests back to the loggers." Not exactly leftist ideology.

I want to think this couple's story will not lend itself to generalizations about the culture. Sometimes kooks are just kooks.

What an odd story. I doubt they were burglars given that fire trucks are supposed to have an axe and other tools to break stuff. More likely folks trying to help but with no idea about how to do it legally. But I do like the arsonist/climate change educator partnership angle.

It's an incredibly odd story.

Good reporting though. I appreciate the lack of spin.

As a local to the Roaring River I can attest to the quasi-eccentric nature of the inhabitants. This could be an innocent event no matter the suspicious circumstances, there’s a lot of quirkiness here, but I can assure you that eastern Linn County is very conservative generally. Fun fact: the Roaring River is the only “river” in the world to flow into a creek (Crabtree Creek).

It's dumb to imply that this proves CO2 is a "leftist" molecule/gas that has any awareness of human shenanigans. When lighting a campfire, do you choose damp or dry kindling? And do you let a fledgling fire just sit there or blow on it to fan the flames? What would happen if you kept blowing on them with Santa Ana force? That's a direct analogy to the L.A. drought-dried, wind-driven firestorm.

Also, the delta smelt had nothing to do with accessible water down there, and the closed Santa Ynez reservoir could have only done a limited extra amount. Getting any amount of water to wind-driven flames is nearly impossible in those canyons, except to armchair quarterbacks bent on pretending global warming can never cause any problems, despite many recent record fires far larger than this one (just more homes burnt this time). Will your ideology ever let you put all that evidence together?

The tiresome "lack of forest management" angle has obvious elements of truth but you can't pragmatically keep miles of rugged chapparal trimmed, and dry foliage makes everything far more explosive. With either trees or brush, you'd have to remove so much of it with "management" that you'd end up with widely spaced collection of totem poles or bush-clumps. And erosion kicks in when too many plants are cropped out. Wind makes flames easily jump crown-to-crown, and even without wind, dry forest floors let it spread. Firefighters are fully aware of this.

DEI hiring is a problem, but incurious conservatives jump on anything that boosts their quest to pretend CO2 doesn't really trap heat.

Did I imply this?

The fire situation in the LA basin did not happen overnight and you are correct with your blowing on a camp fire analogy. What is not arguable is the significant ignorance and where money has not been spent vs where it was spent in the last decade. Million and millions of dollars for homelessness and alternative energy, the bullet train to nowhere, etc. etc. Radical environmentalists have pushed agendas that do not include forest management or water infrastructure improvement. Millions of dollars are unaccounted for. Fires are going to happen, that is not an arguable issue. What, where and how prevention of fires (that have been happening for decades) should not be an arguable issue either.

Again, the guy had anti-Biden posts on social media and wanted to "give the forests back to the loggers." Not exactly ANTIFA (Anti - Fascist) ideology.
