Pro-tax ads feature Minnesotan actress
The woman in the ads, with no apparent ties to Oregon, says she will vote for Measure 118 and expects her family to receive $6,400 from it
The first television ads released by the group supporting an Oregon ballot measure that would increase taxes on corporate sales in excess of $25 million and distribute the proceeds equally to each person who resides in Oregon for at least 200 days out of the year features a Minnesota-based actress with no apparent ties to Oregon who nonetheless claims she is voting yes on the measure and she expects it to deliver $6,400 per year to her family of four.
The woman who appears in the two ads announced by last week by the group supporting Measure 118 on Oregon’s general election ballot is portrayed as an Oregonian who is “voting yes on Measure 118” so she will receive “$6,400 for my family,” depicted graphically as a family of four in the ads.
The pro-Measure 118 group, Oregon Rebate, estimates the measure will provide $1,600 in tax credit or cash payment to every Oregon resident.
The woman goes on to say the measure will give her “more money to spend locally” and “boost local business.” While the ads do not specify that “local” means local to Oregon, they strongly imply it.
Minnesota-based actress and music teacher Kym Chambers Otto on October 3 posted a photo in which she looks exactly like the woman in the ads, dressed exactly like the woman in the ads, in a kitchen that looks exactly like the kitchen in the ads, with a caption that begins, “Started my day shooting a commercial[.]”
The website for Twin Cities Musical Theatre Training lists Otto as a cofounder and provides a biography that says, “Originally from California, Kym relocated to the Twin Cities after living in New York City for a decade.” Neither the biography nor other online information obtained by Oregon Roundup suggest Otto has any connections to Oregon aside from appearing in an ad in which she suggests she is registered to vote in the state and spends at least 200 days per year there.
The acting talent agency Wehmann describes Otto as an actress and model available for hire.
The ads feature no disclosure that the woman depicted in them as an Oregon voter and resident is actually an actress who lives in Minnesota.
Oregon Rebate did not respond to Oregon Roundup’s request for confirmation and comment by publication Tuesday morning.
According to the Oregon Secretary of State online campaign finance disclosure database, Oregon Rebate spent $60,000 with digital ad company McCool Digital LLC of Minneapolis on October 22.
Oregon Rebate has received $450,000 in contributions from a limited liability company linked to California investor Josh Jones, a cryptocurrency advocate and proponent of universal basic income, a scheme whereby the government would provide all citizens with a cash payment annually.
Measure 118 appears on Oregonians’ ballots for the election concluding a week from today. Its opponents the measure constitutes a tax on sales that would increase costs for Oregonians. The state Legislative Revenue Office projects Measure 118 would increase prices in Oregon by 1.3% and create a large budget shortfall for the state.
at the risk of sounding like a broken record:
At about the time our original 13 states adopted their new constitution, in the year 1787, Alexander Tytler (a Scottish history professor at The University of Edinborough) had this to say about “The Fall of The Athenian Republic” some 2,000 years prior:
“A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship.”
“The average age of the worlds greatest civilizations from the beginning of history, has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence:
From Bondage to spiritual faith;
From spiritual faith to great courage;
From courage to liberty;
From liberty to abundance;
From abundance to complacency;
From complacency to apathy;
From apathy to dependence;
From dependence back into bondage.”
Jeff, this might be your best timed story yet. If Oregonians have not yet woke up to the far left manipulation that is (and has been) going on to use us as guinea pigs for every socialistic experiment out there this story should do it!
